[ A. grisella var. luteovelata ] Amanita grisella
E.-J. Gilbert & Cleland
Technical Description. (t.b.d.) BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Description based on Reid (1980). The cap of Amanita grisella is mottled light olive with light streaks. The volva is an incomplete, thin, felty-pulverulent layer; its color is unknown. The stem is 75 x 6 mm in the upper part. No other characters were recorded for the type collection. The spores from a spore print deposited with the type collection measure 6.9 - 9.5 x 6 - 8 µm according to Reid and are subglobose to broadly ellipsoid and amyloid. Clamps are absent at base of basidia. Reid found a second spore print from which he reports nearly globose spores and at least one spore with length shorter than width (possibly a misinterpretation). Gilbert (1940) supplies five drawings of which three are close to being in lateral view and measure 8.5 - 9.8 x 7.0 - 8.5 µm and are subglobose to broadly ellipsoid. Originally collected in New South Wales, Australia. As Reid (1980) suggests, we accept only the information known for the type. The habit illustration of Gilbert (1941) apparently depicts a different fungus. Likewise, much of the original description must be discarded. Wood (1997) apparently misapplies the present name. His species differs from the present one in at least cap color, spore size, and spore shape. For comparison, see A. griselloides D.A. Reid and A. luteolovelata D. A. Reid (formerly considered a variety of the present species). -- R.E. Tulloss Return to Section Validae page. Last changed 27 December 2006. |
