Thank you. Our ISP is very cooperative, but you need to tell
us if you have a problem! |
We will strive to cover (in brief) nomenclatorial
changes and descriptions of new taxa on this page and to
provide references in this site's bibliography(ies).

25.iii.2008. Updated: Species lists for
section Caesareae has been segregated from the species list of
section Vaginatae, and the relevant changes have been made on the
main page. We still need to have taxa in section Caesareae
return the viewer to the correct sectional list page. These
necessary changes will be made as time permits. In addition a numbering error in the
key to section Caesareae pointed out by Dr. Michael Kuo has been corrected. Our thanks to MK.
4.iii.2008. Updated page:
Amanita nothofagi.
28.ii.2008. Updated page:
Amanita muscaria var. persicina.
10.ii.2008. Updated page: Amanita subsolitaria.
21-30.i.2008. Updated home page description of Limacella.
Updated page: Amanita aurantisquamosa.
1.xii.2007. Updated pages: Amanita
elegans. Updated key: Amanita elegans had been
erroneously omitted from treatment in the new key to sect. Caesareae.
It probably belongs there; however, re-examination of its basidia for
basal clamps is required. New names: Three (3) taxa
of Torrendia and two (2) of Amarrendia are
added to the composite checklist for sects. Caesareae and Vaginatae
(formerly the checklist for section Vaginatae). The single
sectional list will be separated into two separate lists as time
permits. The name Torrendia arenaria is not currently listed
anywhere on this site because its proper sectional placement is not yet
clear to the editors.
15-29.xi.2007. A new key to all known taxa of Amanita
sect. Caesareae is now available from the key list. The key
is part of an article that accepts emends the definition of the section in
order to include secotioid and truffle-like taxa now in the genera Torrendia
and Amarrendia. The acceptance of sect. Caesareae
necessitates a major reworking of the sect. Vaginatae species list
and approximately sixty species that will be moved to sect. Caesareae.
This will take some time. New species added: Amanita
lippiae. The bibliography has been expanded by addition of
several recent papers.
7-10.xi.2007: Updated pages: Amanita
arkansana, A. infusca,
A. kalamundae, and A. nothofagi.
31.x.2007: Updated page: Amanita
subjunquillea.
25.x.2007: Updated page: Amanita wellsii.
15-20.x.2007: Updated pages: Amanita
fritillaria, A. siamensis and A. wellsii.
2-8.x.2007: EMAIL PROBLEMS: Anyone who has had email returned by the ISP or by an
intervening server, please email RET at this address: retamanita@comcast.net and
include a copy of all "received" lines from the header of your
returned email.
Thank you. New taxon added: Amanita praelongipes.
Updated pages: Amanita muscaria var. persicina and A.
wellsii.
28-30.ix.2007: Updated page: Amanita
hesleri and A. westii.
19-22.ix.2007: Updated pages: Amanita
breckonii and A. recutita sensu Coker.
12-14.ix.2007: The checklist/ picture books for the New
Jersey Pine Barrens and surrounding regions, sub-Saharan Africa, and for Newfoundland and
Labrador have been updated. An annotated checklist for species
reported from India has been added...this is a PDF made up page images of
a recent article (8.5 Mbytes). Updated
pages: Amanita albocreata, A. muscaria var. muscaria, and A. regalis.
2-5.ix.2007: New page: Amanita recutita sensu
Coker. Updated page: Amanita flavorubens.
27-30.viii.2007: Added species: Amanita
recutita sensu Coker (1917) has been added to the section Vaginatae
list. Amanita pubsecens Schwein. sensu Coker (1917)
has been added to the section Amanita list.
17.viii.2007: Updated species: Amanita
cylindrispora and A. flavoconia.
13.viii.2007: Updated species: Amanita
aprica, A. hemibapha, and A. manginiana sensu W. F. Chiu.
7-8.viii.2007: Check
out our newly updated checklist/picture books. Updated
species. Amanita longitibiale and A. parcivolvata.
1-4.viii.2007: Check
out our checklist/picture books. Updated species: Amanita
biovigera. A new species has been added to the New Jersey Pine
Barrens checklist/picture book -- Amanita sp. N9, in section Vaginatae.
It was previously known to RET only from New York state.
22-31 July 2007: Check
out our checklist/picture books. Updated species: Amanita
hemibapha, A. limbatula, A. muscaria var. muscaria,
A. parva, A. roseitincta, A. virginiana, and A. westii.
14-17 July 2007: Updated species: Amanita
muscaria var. persicina and A. spretella.
19 June 2007: Updated species: Amanita
muscaria var. muscaria, A. oberwinklerana, and A.
subjunquillea var. subjunquillea.
19 June 2007: The Amanita Studies web site is proud to
announce that we will be adding a "subsite" for forest
restoration and studies in mycorrhizae. The editor for this new
part of our site will be Dr. Anne Pringle (Organismic and Evolutionary
Biology, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts). Any
discussions on this "subsite" are preliminary at the present
time. Watch for developments in coming months.
18 June 2007: The Amanita Studies web site is proud
to announce that we will be establishing a series of subsites with their own
editors. The look and operation of the site will not change.
The first of these "subsites" to begin organization will address
mushroom poisoning in general (with emergency information, links to poison
control centers in several areas of the world, etc.) and chemistry of the
several groups of toxins in Amanita (with means of accessing recent
papers and the home pages of labs where work is currently being
done). We are delighted to report that the editorship for the the
toxins and poisoning subsite has been accepted by Dr. Heather E. Hallen
(Michigan State University, East Lansing).
12-18 June 2007: Updated species: Amanita
aprica, A. lilloi, A. novinupta, and A. oberwinklerana. The original description of A. aprica has been
added in the form of a PDF. A new illustrated checklist/picture book has
been drafted for eastern Texas and the Gulf Coast regions of Louisiana and
Mississippi. That page is currently under continuing development,
and it is expected that the Texas checklist will be considerably expanded
in the future. The New Jersey Pine Barrens illustrated checklist has
experienced a number of small repairs. The site bibliography has
been expanded.
4-5 June 2007: Updated species: Amanita
eijii, and A. similis. The bibliography has been
expanded. The home page has been extended to include three other
genera belonging to the family Amanitaceae.
15 May 2007: Updated species: Amanita eliae.
3-8 May 2007: Updated species: Amanita
rubescens and A. xanthocephala.
13-30 April 2007: New species name: The name
"A.
lanei" has been replaced with an older, probable synonym "A. calyptroderma."
Newly added taxa: A. franchetii and A. franchetii f. lactella.
Updated species: Amanita caesarea, A. calyptrata var. alba,
A. calyptratoides, A. flavella, A. hemibapha, A. imazekii, A. lilloi, A. muscaria
var. muscaria, A. rhopalopus, A.
spretella, A. tuza, and A. verna. Removal of taxon: A. rhopalopus f. turbinata
is proposed to be a synonym of the type form.
HISTORICAL ITEMS:
6-11 March 2007: Taxon deleted: Amanita
pantherina var. lutea is considered to be a synonym of A.
parvipantherina. Updated species: Amanita
cinnamomescens.
24-27 February 2007: Excluded species [RET]:
The holotype of Amanita
cystidiosa
O.K. Mill. & Lodge has been examined. The species has proven
not to be an Amanita. It appears to be lepiotoid. It lacks bilateral lamella trama and
acrophysalidic stipe context (hence, failing to fit the definition of the
genus Amanita). In addition, it has thick-walled,
dextrinoid (unknown in Amanita) spores that are barely, or not at all, adaxially
flattened (uncommon in Amanita). The original description emphasizes cheilocystidia and
dextrinoid hyphae in the pileus context. These latter two characters
are unknown in the genus Amanita. The page will remain posted for the time
being, but will be accessible from this news item and not from the Amanita
sect. Amanita species list page. Updated pages: Amanita
albopulverulenta, A. bingensis, A. gioiosa, A. heterochroma, A. lanivolva, A. lilloi,
and A. wellsii.
25-27 July 2006: Added
taxa: Amanita cinnamomescens and A. cokeriana. Deleted
taxon: Amanita decipiens. New pages: Amanita
cinnamomescens, A. javanica, and A. virosa (our 500th species page for the Amanita Studies site). Updated pages: Amanita
bisporigera, A. daucipes, A. exitialis, A. flavorubens, A. gracilior, A. morrisii, A. novinupta,
A. orsonii, A. rubescens, A. rubescens var. alba, A. rubescens var.
congolensis, A. subjunquillea, and A. verna.

WELCOME BACK to Lindsay Possiel! Lindsay is working with us for
the third straight summer doing the great job she always does! We
are now well past the major milestone of 400 species covered at levels 1
or 2.
13-20 July 2005: Hats off to Lindsay Possiel, who is working with
RET again this summer. Thanks to Lindsay's hard work, we have passed the major milestone of 300
pages dedicated to individual taxa of Amanita.
