25.iii.2008. Updated: Species lists for section Caesareae has been segregated from the species list of section Vaginatae, and the relevant changes have been made on the main page.  We still need to have taxa in section Caesareae return the viewer to the correct sectional list page.  These necessary changes will be made as time permits. In addition a numbering error in the key to section Caesareae pointed out by Dr. Michael Kuo has been corrected. Our thanks to MK.

21-30.i.2008.  Updated home page description of Limacella. Updated page: Amanita aurantisquamosa.

1.xii.2007.  Updated pages: Amanita elegansUpdated key: Amanita elegans had been erroneously omitted from treatment in the new key to sect. Caesareae.  It probably belongs there; however, re-examination of its basidia for basal clamps is required.  New names: Three (3) taxa of Torrendia and two (2) of Amarrendia are added to the composite checklist for sects. Caesareae and Vaginatae (formerly the checklist for section Vaginatae).  The single sectional list will be separated into two separate lists as time permits.  The name Torrendia arenaria is not currently listed anywhere on this site because its proper sectional placement is not yet clear to the editors.

15-29.xi.2007. A new key to all known taxa of Amanita sect. Caesareae is now available from the key list.  The key is part of an article that accepts emends the definition of the section in order to include secotioid and truffle-like taxa now in the genera Torrendia and Amarrendia.  The acceptance of sect. Caesareae necessitates a major reworking of the sect. Vaginatae species list and approximately sixty species that will be moved to sect. Caesareae.  This will take some time.  New species added: Amanita lippiae.  The bibliography has been expanded by addition of several recent papers.

19 June 2007:  The Amanita  Studies web site is proud to announce that we will be adding a "subsite" for forest restoration and studies in mycorrhizae.  The editor for this new part of our site will be Dr. Anne Pringle (Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts).  Any discussions on this "subsite" are preliminary at the present time.  Watch for developments in coming months.

18 June 2007: The Amanita Studies web site is proud to announce that we will be establishing a series of subsites with their own editors.  The look and operation of the site will not change.  The first of these "subsites" to begin organization will address mushroom poisoning in general (with emergency information, links to poison control centers in several areas of the world, etc.) and chemistry of the several groups of toxins in Amanita (with means of accessing recent papers and the home pages of labs where work is currently being done).  We are delighted to report that the editorship for the the toxins and poisoning subsite has been accepted by Dr. Heather E. Hallen (Michigan State University, East Lansing).

HISTORICAL ITEMS:

6-11 March 2007: Taxon deleted: Amanita pantherina var. lutea is considered to be a synonym of A. parvipantherinaUpdated species: Amanita cinnamomescens.

24-27 February 2007: Excluded species [RET]: The holotype of Amanita cystidiosa O.K. Mill. & Lodge has been examined.  The species has proven not to be an Amanita.  It appears to be lepiotoid.  It lacks bilateral lamella trama and acrophysalidic stipe context (hence, failing to fit the definition of the genus Amanita).  In addition, it has thick-walled, dextrinoid (unknown in Amanita) spores that are barely, or not at all, adaxially flattened (uncommon in Amanita).  The original description emphasizes cheilocystidia and dextrinoid hyphae in the pileus context.  These latter two characters are unknown in the genus Amanita.  The page will remain posted for the time being, but will be accessible from this news item and not from the Amanita sect. Amanita species list page.   Updated pages: Amanita albopulverulenta, A. bingensis, A. gioiosa, A. heterochroma, A. lanivolva, A. lilloi, and A. wellsii.

25-27 July 2006: Added taxa: Amanita cinnamomescens and A. cokeriana. Deleted taxon: Amanita decipiens. New pages: Amanita cinnamomescens, A. javanica, and A. virosa (our 500th species page for the Amanita Studies site). Updated pages: Amanita bisporigera, A. daucipes, A. exitialis, A. flavorubens, A. gracilior, A. morrisii, A. novinupta, A. orsonii, A. rubescens, A. rubescens var. alba, A. rubescens var. congolensis, A. subjunquillea, and A. verna.
